Honestly? The job market. I love journalism, and I think it really needs more young people with tech skills. I would love to go back and use what I know now to benefit a publication. Unfortunately, I’m not willing to move where the jobs are, and small town papers just aren’t hiring. Ever.

Based on what I’ve heard from my friends who stayed in the industry, the small town papers that are hiring (very infrequently) are resistant to the kind of changes that are necessary for them to survive. I’m afraid that if I went back, it would feel like standing by and watching a very dear old friend die slowly.

But I miss it every day.
