“Built as a company town by U.S. Steel in 1906, Gary had a promising start as a destination on the shores of Lake Michigan in northeast Indiana, only 25 miles from downtown Chicago.”

New York Times error. Gary, Ind. is in northWEST Indiana. On the other side of the state.

This isn’t just a matter of misidentifying the geography of the city. The state of Indiana would have to be fewer than 25 miles wide in order for Gary, “only 25 miles from downtown Chicago,” to be in Northeast Indiana.

This is what happens when you fire your copy editors. Jesus.
